Prelude
Invocation/Into my Heart (Longwood)
Announcements/Prayer Requests
Opening Prayer
Lord, as our denomination meets, we lift them up before you. As our community struggles in the midst of this pandemic, we ask your healing touch. As we gather today, we ask that you open our hearts and our ears to your message for us. (Prayer Requests prayed for)
Lord’s Prayer
Call to Worship from Psalm 13
How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I bear pain in my soul, and have sorrow in my heart all day long?
Consider and answer me, O LORD my God! Give light to my eyes.
I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
* My Faith Looks Up to Thee 359/829
Confession
Lord, we confess, too often we miss what you are trying to tell us. Forgive us for our past and open us to your future.
Open our eyes that we might see you.
Open our ears that we might hear you.
Open our hearts that we might serve you. Amen
Declaration of Forgiveness
Hear the good news from Romans 6. Once we were slaves to sin, but because we have died to sin we belong now only to God. The wages for sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Know that you have been forgiven and be at peace.
Gloria Patri
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever will be, world without end. Amen, Amen.
Prayer for Illumination
Reading of the Word: Genesis 22:1-14
22 After these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you.” 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac; he cut the wood for the burnt offering, and set out and went to the place in the distance that God had shown him. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place far away. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the boy and I will go over there; we will worship, and then we will come back to you.” 6 Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together. 7 Isaac said to his father Abraham, “Father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “God himself will provide the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together.
9 When they came to the place that God had shown him, Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in order. He bound his son Isaac, and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” 13 And Abraham looked up and saw a ram, caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

Sermon: The God Who Provides
Enacted Prophecy – What is it? (Examples - Jonah in the belly of the whale 3 days, Moses lifting the snake in the wilderness, Jeremiah and the underwear (Jeremiah 13)
Why? No paper/radio/internet - word of mouth. Stories were carried down generation after generation, prophets were pointed out when they did strange things, and people talked.
The Parallel – The first father and the first Son of the Promise - to be sacrificed
The three long days when Abraham thought Isaac was dead
The wood he carried to his own sacrifice (Jesus carrying cross)
The Question – Where is the Sacrifice?
Just as the ram saved Isaac, Just as the passover lamb saved the firstborn sons, Jesus was an substitute, sacrificing himself on the cross so that we might be free.
Apostles Creed
* Dedication of Offerings/ *Doxology
* Lord Speak to Me That I May Speak 435/722
* Benediction/Passing the Peace
Now go forth as followers of Jesus, who died on the cross so that we might be free. As you go, May the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you
And also with you
